Wheel clamping butterflies appeared at the beginning of the 20th century to make it easier to remove wheels quickly. Popularised by Tullio Campagnolo in 1930, they replaced conventional nuts and allowed quick changes, particularly in racing. Their lever mechanism ensured efficient tightening without the need for tools.
