Indexed gear shifters appeared in the 1980s and revolutionised gear changing on bicycles. Unlike friction shifters, they have a click mechanism that corresponds to each sprocket or chainring, making gear changes more precise and faster. Each position of the lever moves the derailleur by a precise distance. Shimano popularised this system with its SIS (Shimano Index System). Since then, indexing has become the standard on most modern bicycles.
