The plunger stem slides inside the fork steerer tube. It is then held in place by an expander system, which is adjusted by tightening the top screw. This type of stem is usually mounted on a 1" (25.4 mm) diameter fork tube. For French bikes before about 1985 a diameter of 22 mm is required.
