Suntour, founded in Japan in 1912, made its name with innovations in bicycle drivetrains. In the 1960s and 70s, the brand revolutionised the derailleur with the slant-parallelogram, offering smoother gear changes. Suntour dominated the market until the 1980s, when it lost ground to Shimano and disappeared from the top of the range.
